I guess I'd call Billy's on Burnet my favorite place to get a burger. It's a couple of miles down the road from our house and the kitchen serves up burgers and Frito pies and sandwiches and a usually darn good plate of fried okra or fried green tomatoes until about midnight. Some days, when Logan's gotten home late from an unusually tough day at work, it's the only place that'll do for dinner - a nice greasy burger and tall Shiner.
Last Sunday, we sort of ended up there by default. We tried to go to Cover 3 to check out their burger which has somehow made the Texas Monthly top 50 list, but they'd run out. Of BURGERS. On a day when they're doing a 2 for 1 special. Right.
So, Billy's it was!

The place is very comforting and inviting, in that corner bar slightly sticky-floored way, and there's even a nice outdoor patio when it's not 100 degrees outside. I don't know when that'll be, but people tell me that someday the temperature here will go back down. I'll believe it when I see it.
We ordered two of their smaller burgers, with a quarter pound patty and all of the trimmings, and I upgraded to a side of okra.

It is a little odd is that the small patties don't really cover the bun. Luckily the bun's pretty tasty. Tomatoes, onions, lettuce and mayo come on the burger, and there's a little condiment stand where you can pick up ketchup and mustard and hot sauce.
The burgers were solid, but not as good as they've been the last few times we've been in. The buns were barely toasted, and it seemed like the b team might have been working the fryer - Billy's normally has a sure hand with the grease, but on our visit we encountered a few limp fries and some soft okra. Still better than Counter Cafe's fries, but not what I've grown to love about Billy's.

I wouldn't travel across town to eat this burger, though it is a solid effort. I might go some ways for their ridiculous happy hour specials, and even further for their Happiest Hour deals between 4 and 5.
And if we ever do make it back to Cover 3 to try what TX Monthly calls the 12th best burger in Texas, I'll let you know.
Billy's on Burnet is at 2015 Hancock and is open 7 days a week until at least midnight (1 on Saturday). 512.407.9305.

Love the meaty pictures - I want one now. I LIKE the fries from the counter cafe! I'm a sucker for the sweet potato though.

Thanks - it's definitely a burger kind of summer!
On the day we went (a busy Saturday), the fries at the Counter Cafe were limp, greasy, and cold, but I'm always willing to give fried potatoes another try!
